The tombs of the Venizelos family is a busy location a few kilometers east of the town which offers a stunning panoramic view of the city.
These are the graves of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophocles Venizelos. Eleftherios Venizelos, whose desire was the specific location to be his last residence, today considered one of the most charismatic leaders of Greece and the creator of modern Greece. Sophocles Venizelos served as Prime Minister of Greece from 1943 until 1952.
The area is landscaped with seating, park, stone paves and a lovely garden. Here lies the statue of the hero Spyros Kagialedaki who held high the Greek flag during a bombardment of rebellious Cretans by the Great Powers who opposed to the union of Crete with Greece.
