The Lassithi Plateau has always been part of agriculture. One of the most useful tools of farmers from the late 19th century were the windmills, which were intended to water the fields by taking advantage of the constant winds.
A few decades ago, when the irrigation of the fields depended solely by the 12,000 windmills that was serving plateau, white sails lend a unique beauty to the landscape. Until recently, a big part of windmills have been abandoned or removed. Today there is an attempt to restore windmills with a new cloth technology, which also won heritage award from the European Union.
Another of the most characteristic points of the plateau is the 26 stone mills that we meet at the main entrance of the plateau. Stone mills of plateau are the largest place with windmills of Greece. Today unfortunately is ruined and have rebuilt only three of them, while efforts are being made for the maintenance of more.
