The Maritime Museum of Chania is located on the eastern edge of the old Venetian harbor at the entrance of the Venetian fortress Firka, the building where it housed. It is easily recognizable for the guests walking in the old port, by the huge anchor and propeller located next to its entrance and by its characteristic red color.
It was established in 1973 and has been awarded by the Historical and Ethnological Society. The two storey exhibition consists of 2,500 exhibits dating from the Bronze Age until today. Among these you will see relics, finds from shipwrecks, maps, models of ships, various nautical instruments, paintings, photographic material, etc. Also there is an exhibition of sea species, with a rich collection of shells from around the world and a rich library with Greek and foreign content Navy versions.
The main exhibit of the museum is the the commercial Minoan ship, "Minos", made from authentic materials, tools and the 15th century BC construction processes which also displayed as pictures of the construction process and the experimental journey.
