Matala is a small seaside village with its beach, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Crete, since its history begins from the prehistoric era and reaches the 60's and the movement of hippies.
Matala are a natural bay at the exit of a valley, geological form that in ancient times was considered ideal to serve as a port of the palace of Phaistos, the second largest Minoan city. Later, with the advent of the Romans it was a port of the Roman city of Gortys.
The most characteristic monument and the first image that comes to mind of those who visit Matala is the famous carved caves in limestone over the beach. These caves were used in antiquity for burials and later as houses, also there is a cave that is said lived the Roman general Brutus.
In 60's, the quiet idyllic landscape became an attraction for the movement of the time, the "flower children", who came to give life in ancient caves and make Matala famous around the world, hosting many famous musicians of the time such as Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin.
