The Folklore Museum of Aghios Nikolaos is a private exhibition which opened its doors to the public in 1978. It is located near the bridge of Lake Voulismeni and is housed in the building of the old city port authority.
The museum is a unique treasury of Cretan art, tradition and culture. It has items everyday use, agricultural tools, household utensils, musical instruments, storage items, textile tools, coins and many other handmade small objects that form the image of the everyday life of the inhabitants in the past centuries.
The main feature of the exhibition is the collection of rare textiles and embroidery, and towels and aprons unique in their kind with elaborate decorations. There is also a large number of manuscripts, books and priestly images, photos and an excellent weapons collection of General Ioannis Alexakis by the Turkish occupation and the Balkan wars.
