The Morosini Fountain or "Lions Fountain", as known to the inhabitants of the city, is one of the most famous and beautiful sites of Heraklion and decorates the busiest square of the city, Eleftherios Venizelos Square.
Build the period of Venetian rule, in 1628, by the general predictor Francesco Morosini, from where it got its name. Even managed to supply water to the fountain constructing a complex, for the times, system of tubes and canals bringing water from the village of Archanes, more than 15 km away from the city.
The fountain consists of a 8-curved marble basin that collects water and is embellished with relief representations from mythology, symbols of the sea and Venetian coats of arms. The water flows from the mouths of four lions, which support a smaller fountain on which there was a statue of Poseidon.
