The central market was once the place where the residents of Heraklion found clustered sellers, artisans and various other shops which supplied them daily necessities products. Today the objective of central market may be replaced by supermarkets, department stores and the weekly open air markets that take place in different places in the city, but the central market continues to maintain its picturesque character, to a meeting point for locals and be visited by many tourists every day.
At the end of the paved road of the central market there is the Bembo Fountain and Turkish Sembil, monuments recount the prolonged use in years of the road as a place of popular activity and service daily needs of the residents of each era.
