The Loggia of Rethymno, was a Venetian building which was built in 1538-1540.
This was a public building in which deliberated the princes and nobles of the city, and were discussing the various political, economic and trade issues of the era. Served even as a recreational area and gambling club for noblemen. It is a creature of the famous Veronese architect M. Sanmicheli, who was responsible for the design of the fortifications of the island's cities. The Loggia of Rethymno built to the standards of Loggia of Venice and Heraklion but with less adornment glory than them.
During Turkish occupation, the Loggia was converted into a mosque in honor of Hajji Hussein, conqueror of Rethymnon. Especially on the west side of the building was reconstructed minaret which was demolished in 1930 due to its ramshackle condition. From 1951 after maintenance of the building, housed in it the Archaeological Museum of city where it remained until a few years ago. Today the building operates as shop with genuine museum copies.
