The Archaeological Museum of Chania was founded in 1963 and is located near the old Venetian port of the city and is housed in the church of the Venetian monastery of St. Francis.
It contains exhibits of Minoan and Roman periods which have been excavated throughout the city and around region. There are finds from the ancient city of Kydonia, Hydramia, Aptera, Polyrhinia, Kissamos, Elyros, Yrtakina, Syia, Lissos, as well as from the ancient cities of Axos and Lappa from Rethymno area.
The collection of the museum consists mainly of a large number of coins, jewelery, ceramics, seals, metal tools, sculptures, sarcophagus, inscriptions and two mosaic floors depicting the god Dionysos and Ariadne.
In 2008 it announced the construction of a new modern building to house the museum, which has now been completed and the completion of the transfer of exhibits expected in the next years.
