The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is dedicated predominantly to Minoan period as it houses a unique collection of excavation finds by classifying it into one of the largest and most glorious museums in Greece and one of the most important of Europe.

The museum exhibition consists of more than 15.000 items covering a period of 5000 years from the Neolithic to the Greco-Roman period as it houses important finds from the Roman cities of the island. Most exhibits come mainly from prehistory period (Minoan), forming a complete picture of the social, economic life and the art of the island in antiquity.

In the museum you will see unique pieces of pottery, excellent stone carving, seal engraving, gold works excellent of its technique and sensitivity to diversity subjects, metalwork such as household utensils, tools, weapons and sacred objects. Finally, particularly relevant are the frescoes from the palace of Knossos, which colors are taken from nature and have preserved almost unchanged until today.
