Dikteon cave located on the Lassithi Plateau on the north side of the mountain Dikti from where it got its name. It is approximately 50 minutes from the town of Malia, at an altitude of 1020 meters above the village Psychro.
This is one of the most famous caves in Greece and one of the most important archaeological sites, as the legend says that Zeus, the father of all the gods of antiquity, was born here. The findings on the altar in the entrance of cave, which were offerings, seems that cave was used as a cult place since 2000 b. C .. Subsequent findings inside the cave speculate the usage of ave for residence during the Minoan period, too.
The cave consists of five rooms, full of stalactites and stalagmites, with a small lake in the lower part of the cave whose level rises during winter months. The internal area of the cave is 2,200 sq. m. and the visitor’s route length is 250 meters. To get to the cave entrance following a ten minutes uphill pave through oak. On the start of the trail you will find donkeys that can carry you up to the cave. Also on the basis of the route to the cave you will find souvenir shop and a small restaurant with great view of the plateau.
